Drake University: Des Moines Pride

Drake University is a private university located in Des Moines, Iowa. It was founded back in 1881 by George Carpenter and Francis Marion Drake. George was a teacher and a preacher while Drake was a union general in the civil war. The university started out with only 77 students and one building.

The first permanent building in the university called Old Main was completed in 1883. The building still exists in the campus and it houses the administration offices, Levitt halls and Sheslow Auditorium. Drake University offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.


Drake University has a full time enrollment of about 3,100 undergraduates and 1800 graduates. 97% of the freshmen prefer to live on campus as the university provides good on-campus life. Being a small university the living conditions are very well maintained. Admission to the university is quite competitive because the acceptance is rate is around 69%.

The popular majors that most of those enrolled in Drake University pursue include; Marketing, Actuarial science, accounting and public relations. The first international students were enrolled to the university in 1886 from China, Persia, Japan and Armenia.


Drake University also excels in sports. The first sport in the university was basketball which was started in 1885. The next sport to join was football and then track sports followed. Drake University has won many historic and notable games over the years. For instance Drake University won the first ever night football game the west of the Mississippi against Simpson college by beating them 41-6.

Drake University competes in basketball, football, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, track & field and crew. Drake Relays is one notable event that happens in the university. The relays began in 1910 and today they draw athletes from different parts of the world.


The university has small classroom populations with most of the classes having less than 100 students. A high percentage of the classes have 2 – 19 students. This therefore means that the quality of education is high at the university as the professors are able to give the attention required to the students.

Polls have also shown that the professors at the university are very passionate about what they teach and they care about the success of the students. Drake University has six colleges which are; college of arts and sciences, college of business and public administration, school of education, school of journalism and Mass communication, law school and college of pharmacy and health sciences. Students also enjoy delicious bbq food at the dining halls in this Des Moines University.

The school of law is one of the oldest in the university started back in 1865. It was accredited in 1923 when accreditation began. It is a member of the Association of American Law Schools and it is ABA approved with a chapter of Order of the Coif. It therefore means that the institution encourages excellence in legal education.

The college of pharmacy is another highly ranked college of Drake University. It offers a four year Doctor of Pharmacy degree and is accredited by ACPE.
